It’s not often a world-title contender goes on The Search mid season. But, when Mick Fanning let Gabriel Medina know where he was heading with Mason Ho, it was too good for Gabby to pass up. Medina adjusted his plans, slid into the mission, and shifted gears to hunt some wild slabs in the wildly remote coasts of Australia.
This was no luxury trip either. The crew stayed in vermin-infested cabins in the middle of nowhere and survived off two-minute noodles and sausages in bread for dinner. Medina ate nothing but cheese sandwiches for most meals. Mason Ho even woke up one morning to find his toothbrush had been totally devastated by rats. Despite these challenges, the surfers had an incredible time. It’s what The Search is all about.
“That was the stuff I dream of,” says Mason Ho about the trip. “I couldn’t believe, not one person around or out. Then surfing with those two guys, they’re not only surfing world champions, they’re like human world champions too.”
Mason himself had to be selective of the sessions he surfed in while at such remote spots. After sustaining an injury during the Eddie Aikau big wave event early this year, it was touch and go whether he’d come at all. In true Mason style, he made the most of it anyway, throwing himself over ledges and threading perfect tubes on most days. He also added classic Mason Ho moments, like losing the car keys on the last day. Not wanting to be stuck in the scrublands, Mason scoured the entire area for over an hour until he finally found them… in his pocket.
The cars themselves took some serious punishment during the trip. The crew covered huge distances between surf spots, traveling upwards of 6 hours each day, on highways, down dusty bush tracks, over dunes and through soft beach sand (even if waivers had been signed voiding any insurance for off-road driving). Uncle Mick took the helm most often, putting his 4WD skills to good use, getting the car out of some tight situations, using seaweed coverage to avoid getting bogged too badly.
There’s also the insane surfing on display, with Gabriel launching knee-punishing airs, Mick surfing solo on a dredging righthander, and Mason Ho throwing himself over the ledge on some shallow, shallow slabs despite his injury. “It’s only dry in front of it,” he justifies at one point, about a particularly tricky left.
Documenting the adventure was Surfing World editor Vaughan Blakey and filmmaker Nick Pollet. Shot in ultra high-quality resolution, the 25-minute film captures the expansive nature of Australia’s landscape, the comradery between the team, and the sometimes spooky feeling of surfing at the edge of the world. There is one heartstopping moment in the film where Fanning is brushed by something dark and fast in the channel while paddling in.
Considering his history with sea life, you can feel the tension yourself, before realising at the same time as him that it was ‘just’ a seal. In more sublime frames, there are pods of dolphins swimming through the line up, plus the iconic appearance of emus and kangaroos. The constant company of marsupials along the trip, is what made Gabriel Medina dub the adventure ‘The Kangs’.

When mick and dh were designing the mf twin They experimented with many new ideas - Outlines, rockers, concaves and fin Measurements. There were some mad scientist Moments but along the way not only did They find the mf twin but they also Discovered ‘utopia’.
This was the one board mick just kept Coming back to... For its speed. It was the Fastest board he has ever ridden. In research stages dh made one for liam, Who also praised it as the fastest and Most stable board he has ever ridden. Liam rode ‘utopia’ in the us open to a Quarter final result. The design is getting rave reviews From all dhd team riders and is Going to be a game changer!
What makes this board so good is the Combination of the flatter rocker and Less front foot concave than the dna. With a wider nose and super squash tail, It glides from section to section and is Controlled throughout turns. The fins Are clustered together more like a twin. This board has speed and moves a lot of Water. It creates less drift giving it Maximum power from turn to turn.

The endless pursuit for fun, and the true freedom that comes from being totally unplanned, we're here to prove the idea that 'staying active' has nothing to do with 'staying' at all.
Constantly curious. Forever keen. We thrive on not knowing what's around the next corner, what's behind the next wave, or what's over the next hill.
Our goal is to deliver modern, reliable, versatile products that are made for everyday active discovery. A world where surf meets sport, and sport meets street. We want you to get out there & do it...
whatever your ‘it’ is.
It's freedom in motion, or as we like to call it... 'Active Discovery'.

The latest and greatest in our long line of world class all-rounders, the Schooner is a high-volume performance board. Why did Mikey want to call it the Schooner? The wide point has been pushed forward, so more of the foam is at the top... Like a beer. Mikey loves beer and so do we, but the science doesn’t stop there. Like any good beverage you don’t want it too flat either – this is a performance-oriented sled after all.
A medium curve, close to the Monsta rocker, prevents catching in critical parts of the wave, and provides the ideal balance between generating speed and maintaining control during explosive manoeuvres. This is complemented by a fuller outline, close to the Raging Bull, with a similar foil maintaining thickness in the middle, but relatively low rails. Just like our EasyRider range, this lets you ride a thicker board than usual (approx. 1/8”).

Kelly has always had a deep relationship and passion for fins being that they are a critical component of board design and performance. We wanted to bring this to life by launching a fin brand driven by Kelly’s vision of performance and eco responsibility. We believe as surfers we have a responsibility to make fins as eco-friendly as possible and ensure we keep our ocean floor free from “Lost and Broken fins”. Endorfins are designed to be screwed into the fin box to secure the base of the fin and allow the carbon flex patterns to truely come to life. In addition, we have also designed the fins to float so they can be retrieved from the ocean if needed. Each set is built with a base that is compatible with either FCSII or Futures boxes. The Futures compatible base on Endorfins will work just like a fin built by Futures with a Futures base. The FCSII compatible base will require two screws that will come with the fins. Endorfins with FCSII compatible bases will not click in and click out.
The design of these fins are the culmination of Kelly’s many years and extensive experience with a variety of designs and templates. This unique flex pattern is created by a carbon twill, layered with an ultralight carbon veil over a P.E.T core. The P.E.T core is majority air resulting in Fins so light they float on water. Combining that knowledge, and several rounds of testing and adjusting over the past year and a half, we are excited to present Endorfins to the world.

The CI Mid is a modern classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and refining this genre.
Inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins, the CI Mid infuses that vibe with the crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by modern features synonymous with Merrick design principles. Boasting a moderate midlength template with low entry rocker and foam forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, graduated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.
Created by Britt Merrick, through the work of Dane Reynolds, the Two Happy takes all the high performance speed and flow of the original Happy but makes it more accessible and user friendly for a broader range of surfers and conditions.
With added entry rocker and increased double concave, the Two Happy is looser, rolls rail to rail more easily, and carves better in the pocket. Our team describes the board as exceptionally fast, responsive and solid under the feet. The fuller rails and wider, thicker tail block provide ease of paddle, ride and acceleration.
To enjoy all of out state-of-the-art shortboard performance design characteristics packed into one easy-to-ride and accessible board, look no further than the Two Happy.

HEY ROB, WHAT IS THE SEASIDE..?
Just evolving the Go Fish to something new, really. The Go Fish goes fast and feels skatey and loose and I love it, and riding it for a couple years made me want to feel more high performance – more carves, tighter turns. So the Seaside is about refining… less area in the tail, narrowing the tips of the swallow, creating more curve and narrowing the nose. All elements for ripping while the Go Fish stays cruisey and fun.
The Seaside is quad only, why?
I decided that if i was going to make a quad I would make a quad that’s strictly a quad … Design the concaves and bottom contours around that. I actually redesigned my entire concave setup that I’ve been using on the Moonbeam and Go Fish, and did it with the quad setup in mind so that it all works together.
Why name this shape after your home break, Seaside?
Naming surfboards might be the hardest thing to do on the planet [laughing]. It’s just the perfect little stick when I surf my home spot, Seaside.
Why is the Seaside built in Helium?
The first one I made for Tahiti was LFT and I was riding it in 6 foot tubes. But most everyone surfs a shape like the Seaside at beach breaks and little point breaks, so we made it in Helium because it’s really light, very responsive, really flexy with a softer feel and very durable. It’s the best option for a shape like the Seaside in smaller, weaker waves, I think.

The Dominator II is a revisited version that I’m super excited about. The Dominator has been a staple in my quiver, and the Firewire line, since its inception in 2008. The DM II is meant to be a clean update of the original with design features that allow it to work well in a wider range of conditions and enhance its performance.
The obvious outline change is the tail going to a squash from the round tail. Also, the rails are slightly more refined and performance oriented. The concave is the same under the front foot but splits into a subtle, double-barrel and V out the tail in the last 5”. I normally look for a round tail to provide smoothness in transition from rail to rail and during turns, but the squash tail is proving to not only have that quality as well, but also a bit more release in the turns.

About Drag Board Co (Words by Monster Children Magazine):
Drag came out of nowhere, and by nowhere, we mean the industrial estate just north of Wollongong, which in the grand scheme of things is precisely nowhere. Australian surf culture, and the brands that both funded and reflected it, was once a bastion of larrikinism and authenticity, but as with all things, once they grew and the money got serious, they—almost without exception—sold up, sold out, and lost touch with the culture that spawned them. Brands like Mambo, Hot Tuna, and countless others either went the way of the dodo, or ended up shadows of their whacked-out, brilliant, former selves, sitting on the shelves with a whole lot of other stuff at stores like Big W. With the renaissance of Australiana that’s been sweeping the country in the last five years, Australian surfing was crying out for something that it could be proud of. And it came, from all places, a bodyboarding & softboard brand from an obscure piece of coast an hour and a half south of Sydney.
